Observe: 5 Simple OODA Loop Lessons

Lesson 1. Anticipate. The Boyd Cycle or OODA Loop is about adapting to your environment. You should be ready to learn from your last cycle by anticipating the results. This will boost your ability to adapt.

Lesson 2. It’s a competitive environment. The OODA Loop teaches us to wield this dual-edged sword. Everything you learn about improving your observe step can be inverted and used against your competition. What would you like them to see?

Lesson 3. Perspective is key. Exercise the mental discipline to continually search for a better perspective. Congratulations to the 1 in 500 that watched the Feynman video in my previous article, you are exceptional. Consider shifting perspective by hierarchy as discussed in that article.

Lesson 4. It’s all fake news. You are presented with what others want you to see, not necessarily what is true. Diversify and mutate your sources and verify randomly. Don’t fall victim to common mental errors like confirmation bias.

Lesson 5. When you recognize an opportunity or threat, zoom in. The more important it is, the more you should observe in detail and avoid distractions. This requires focus.
